Carob For Dogs Not Chocolate

Updated: May 17, 2023

So often I hear people say that they give their dog a bite of chocolate candy. Chocolate is toxic for dogs. That is why we make our sweet dog treats with Carob. So, what is Carob? How is it different than chocolate?

Carob comes from the pods of the carob tree. When the pods are ripe, the sweet pulp is removed, roasted, and ground into a fine powder. This powder is often a substitute for chocolate in baking recipes. It has many health benefits for the heart, muscle function and nerves. Carob has a similar taste to chocolate but is sweeter. I think it almost has a little Carmel flavor. The powder has a toasty flavor and a texture like cocoa powder. It has been used in vegan recipes for years. What I can tell you is that our in-house taste testers love the flavor. We make it in different shapes and sizes so that it is Fur Baby size appropriate. Somehow, they know it is a special treat.

Most dog Fur Baby Parents know that chocolate is toxic, but many people don't really know why. Chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine. These two chemicals are classified as methylxanthines.

They can cause health problems for your Fur Babies that range from mild to severe. If your dog does get a hold of chocolate the signs to watch for are:

Diarrhea,

vomiting

restlessness

increased thirst

Tremors

Seizures

rapid breathing.

My rule of thumb is if, my Fur Baby isn't acting right, consult your Veterinarian.
